Sillamäe is a town in northern Estonia, in Ida-Viru County and has a population of 13 686 as of
1st of January 2016.
Sillamäe, or then known as Sillamäggi, was first mentioned in 1502, when the area was under the control of the Livonian Order. It got its town rights in 1957.
The total area of the town is 10,54 km².
On the hills east of Sillamäe, known as Sinimäed, is the place where one of the bloodiest battles on Estonian soil took place in WW2. The battle was between, in fact, Nazi Germany and USSR. Estonians were forcefully recruited to both sides.
